WBS, Teaching and Reaching through the Years


Year   Event Description
1937
   Jimmie Lovell outlines his plan in the premier issue of the West Coast Christian for teaching by correspondence.
1944
  The Lawrence Ave. church in Nashville uses funds from Jimmie to print correspondence courses for the military. These courses reach C.A.O. Essin in Nigeria -- and he is baptized!
1950
  Eldred Echols and Boyd Reese, first missionaries to follow up with Essien, find he has 10,000 converts!
1962
  Jimmie publishes ACTION, dedicated to world evangelism.
1972
  Jimmie L. and Howard Cox receive 100 names from Africa (Doris Pennick and Richard Kruse) and 100 from the Caribbean (Jolly Meyers) The Torrance church quickly grows to 50 teachers and 2.000 students.
1973
  A plan is conceived so that other churches can teach with correspondence. Soon, the program is named "World Bible School"
1974
  20,000 students are enrolled with 600 teachers; teachers can not keep up with the demand!
1975
  "Light of the World" by James Tolle serves as a first course. Leonard Mullens edits lessons for the next generation of courses, including the red Six Lesson booklet.
1976
  The WBS Logo first appears! Student enrollment reaches 400,000. Danny and Donna Compton open the Garland supply office.
1978
  Reuel Lemmons joins Jimmie, handling ACTION from Austin.
1979
  WBS reports that teachers are busy -- and 600,000 students and 22,000 baptisms since its inception! The Westover Hills church in Austin oversees WBS.
1980
  Jake Coppinger becomes the first American supported to coordinate student follow up. The White Bluff supply office opens.
1983
  WBS incorporates, according to US non-profit law, and holds its first board meeting.
1984
  Jimmie, 87, passes on to receive his crown; Reuel takes over as director.
1985
  The John Reese family, in Africa, is the first to devote full time as US missionaries to WBS field follow up. Westover Hills provides the first WBS offices.
1987
  Tex Williams named director. World English School begins, later developing into World English Institute with Dick Ady.
1989
  Reuel, 77, passes on to enjoy his reward.
1993
  The Master Series begins with the red and blue Intro, then gradually adds courses on God, Jesus, Good News, and the New Birth.
1994
  The "God Bless Africa" campaign recruits 150,000 students. First in-country WBS mail box set up in Ghana; sorting begins in Austin.
1995
  WBS goes online! Kit Lawson coordinates the program from Abilene.
2000
  World English School launches again with all new lessons. WBS moves into its own building!
2001
  The first FIF (Follow up Information Flow) office opens in Zimbabwe. Ian Fair initiates the online Center for Church Enrichment.
2002
  The Master Series introduces its first advanced course, "The Family of God".
2003
  WBS celebrates 30 years of work and looks in faith to the next 30 years and beyond...!
2005
  The Master Series introduces its second advanced course, "Live a Life of Love "
